Why these tools exist
Bingo is a game of chance, and a phone makes it easy to play a little more often than planned. UK rules therefore require every licensed operator to give players simple ways to set boundaries, take breaks and step away altogether. The tools look slightly different from app to app, but they fall into five groups.
The five tools, and what each one does
| Tool | What it does | Typical options |
|---|---|---|
| Deposit limit | Caps how much you can pay in over a period | Daily, weekly or monthly amount |
| Reality check | Pops up a reminder of how long you have been playing | Every 15, 30 or 60 minutes |
| Time-out | Pauses the account for a short period | One day to several weeks |
| Self-exclusion | Closes the account for a long period | Six months or more |
| GamStop | Blocks every UK-licensed site at once | Six months, one year or five years |
A deposit limit is the most useful of all, and the one to set first. Lowering a limit takes effect straight away; raising one normally comes with a cooling-off period, so a decision made in the middle of a session cannot undo a decision made calmly beforehand.
Where to find them in an app
The tools usually sit under Account, Settings or a menu item called Safer gambling or Responsible gaming. Opening that section on the first day, before the first deposit, takes a minute and makes every later session easier to keep in proportion. If you play on more than one device, the limits follow the account, not the phone.
A few phone settings help as well. Screen Time on an iPhone and Digital Wellbeing on Android can put a daily time cap on a bingo app or on the browser, and both can block an app outright at set hours. Turning off marketing notifications in the app stops reminders about offers, while keeping the ones for games you have already pre-bought. Some UK banks also let you block gambling payments from their own app, a useful backstop if you want a harder stop than a deposit limit. None of these replace the operator’s tools; they add a second layer that sits on your own device.
What the brands we recommend list
| Brand | Tools named by the operator |
|---|---|
| Deposit limits, gross deposit limits, take a break, reality checks, self-exclusion | |
| Net and gross deposit limits, Take a Break, reality checks, self-exclusion, GAMSTOP link | |
| Net and gross deposit limits, take a break, reality checks, self-exclusion, GAMSTOP link |
All three are run by Rank Interactive (Gibraltar) Ltd under UK Gambling Commission account 57924, so the same set of controls appears in each account area. The tools each reviewed brand names are listed side by side in the full comparison.
GamStop in practice
GamStop works across the whole market, not just one app. Registration is free and asks for your name, address, date of birth and email. Once active, every online operator licensed by the UK Gambling Commission must block you for the period you choose, and the block cannot be lifted early. Deleting an app is not the same thing: the account still exists and can be opened again in a browser, which is why GamStop is the stronger step.
Signs it is time to use them
The tools work best before they feel necessary. Common signals are playing longer than intended, chasing a loss with another deposit, or playing to change a mood. If any of these sound familiar, set a lower limit now, take a time-out, or speak to someone.
Getting support
GambleAware offers free, confidential advice and treatment, and GamStop handles self-exclusion across the UK market. The mobile setup guide shows where limits sit during registration, and each bingo app review lists the tools its operator offers.
Quick answers
Do all UK bingo apps offer deposit limits?
Yes. Operators licensed by the UK Gambling Commission must let you set limits on what you deposit. You can usually choose a daily, weekly or monthly amount in the account area of the app.
What is the difference between a time-out and self-exclusion?
A time-out is a short break, from a day to several weeks, after which the account reopens. Self-exclusion is longer, usually at least six months, and the account stays closed for the whole period even if you change your mind.
What is GamStop?
GamStop is the free national self-exclusion scheme for Great Britain. One registration blocks you from every online gambling site and app licensed by the UK Gambling Commission for the period you choose.
Where can I get free help with gambling?
GambleAware runs free and confidential support, and GamCare offers a helpline and live chat. GambleAware and GamStop are linked in the footer of every page on this site.
